PRESS RELEASE 03/11/2011 LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT PDF Print E-mail

Athens , 3 November 2011
Mr. President,

Following the remarks made with my 1.11.2011 letter to you, I proclaim that I remain consistent to the assertions I have already expressed and I put to your knowledge the ensuing points:
I register the agony caused by your persistence to conduct a referendum, which could endanger the position of Greece in the European Union and jeopardize her European perspective. In these critical moments, the fake dilemma that the People are called to answer, would only result in further advancing the divisiveness already recorded in the Greek society.
Up to this day, I have always supported the government with my vote as an MP. Notwithstanding my candid objections, I have always expressed them with the outmost respect and I have strictly confined them in the internal procedures of our party, in order to avert the imminent bankruptcy of the country. For this reason I believe that we cannot transfer the responsibilities created by the policies we have endorsed so far to the totality of the Greek people, and notably today, after the sacrifices that the people have endured during the last two years.
I choose to put the interest of our nation before the interest of the party or my personal interests. The moments we live call us all to accept the burden of our responsibility and I hope that in this way I assume my personal share of the responsibility towards the nation and the Greek citizens.
I urge you even in this moment, not to lead the country to the direction you have elected and instead to uphold the Agreement of the 26th of October, by reversing your decision to call a referendum.
With this letter, I wish to inform you that I do not intend to resign from the position of the elected representative of my fellow-citizens and of the people of my generation; nonetheless, I will not support your government in Friday’s confidence vote.

Yours sincerely,
Eva  Kaili
