Following the recent spate of natural disasters in Europe:
1. What effective countermeasures are being envisaged by the Commission to contain the resulting losses?
2. The European Union is committed to helping the victims of man-made and natural disasters throughout the world, providing aid to over 120 million people annually(1). Indeed, the EU and its Member States are the world’s largest source of humanitarian aid. However, the assistance granted by the EU represents less than 1% of its annual budget — just over EUR 2 per EU citizen. Given the lack of resources, what measures are being envisaged by the Commission to improve matters and what action will be taken in the context of broader EU financial policy?
3. Finally, ‘crisis management is the application of strategies designed to help an organisation deal with a sudden and significant negative event’. What preventive strategies are being envisaged by the Commission?
