While Greek citizens already have to face the burden of their unsustainable debts on a daily basis, public debt continues to rise and part of the country’s revenue is going to the EU as a result of the fines imposed on Greece for failing to comply with EC law. These fines are something of a mystery to most Greeks, who are paying them without even realising it. The Charter of Fundamental Rights and the EU Treaties stress citizens’ right to freedom of information, access to documents and, of course, good administration.

Can the Commission say:

— What fines has the EU imposed on Greece?
— How much are those fines costing the country, per month?
— Are any statistics available for similar issues which have been neglected by the Greek Government and which may lead to EU fines? If so, can you provide them?
